Topic 5 : Synthesis.

Assalamualaikum,

In topic 5, we have learnt about the synthesis which is the fifth step in Big 6. From my understanding, synthesis is organizing & combining the information together & presenting the information. By using the synthesis it allow people to get more understand. There are 4 organizational strategies:

Organizational by Category or Concept, Chronological Organization, Hierarchical Organization, Alphabetical Organization.

1) Organizational by Category or Concept : Breaking down into the several or respective parts.

2) Chronological Organization : According to the time-line, steps, process & etc.

3) Hierarchical Organization : Used when the information is best conveyed in a specific order.

4)Alphabetical Organization : Follow the alphabetical letter, e.g : A,B,C,D & etc.

Alhamdulillah, finally we are finished the topic, I would to say the deepest thankful to Miss Nisha because gave me the precious knowledge that very useful in my study and my life as well.

Topic 4 : Citation, Bibliography & Reference.

Assalamualaikum,

In this topic, I have learnt how to do the reference of the books, articles and other sources when refer to this sources in order to complete the researching a topic and writing a paper. The material list have following component such as:

-Author.
-Title.
-Place of publication.
-Publisher.
-Year of publication.

I have learnt how to do references by using APA style.  APA is stand for American Psychological Association. There are 3 rules for APA style which are TITLE, AUTHOR, and DOCUMENTATION. For Documenting Author, have several ways to write depends on amount of author of that book. If in 1 book have 2 author, we can write like this : Izzo, J. & Gates, B. (1999). But if the author more than 6, we just add { et. al } after the sixth author's name.

Rules for references :
  • We have to capitalize only the first letter in each words, title or subtitle.
  • Underline or italic the Title of books, Title of Journal, Title of Magazines, Title of newspaper.
  • If place of publication have many, only choose the first one.
  • Arrange in alphabetical order.
  • Do not put the number/bullet in bibliography/reference.
  • Single space.
use hanging indent (1/2 inch).

APA Citation

There are 3 sources of integration, that are QUOTATIONS, PARAPHRASING & SUMMARIZING.

1) QUOTATIONS.

  • Use the author's words exactly and use quotation mark only for short quotation.
  • We cannot use if more than 40 words.
  •  Give the year of publication in parentheses after the writer's name and page number at the end of the quotation.
  • Do not forget to put a period AFTER the parentheses not before.
  •  Must be identical to the original.

2) PARAPHRASING.

  • Put a passage from source material into your own words.
  • Attribute paraphrases to their original sources.
  • Paraphrases are usually shorter than, but may be the same length as the original passage.
  • Paraphrases take a more focused segment of the source and condense it slightly.
  • Cite the source and the date.
  • Do NOT use quotation marks.

3) SUMMARIZING.

  • Put the main ideas into your own words, including the main points.
  • Summaries are significantly shorter than the original.
  • Do not use quotation marks.
  • State only the most important idea or fact.
  • Use as few words as possible.

If we did not do the references when taking someone work, it is plagiarism.

Topic 3 : Search Tools & Search Strategies.

Assalamualaikum,

In this topic, we have learnt about SEARCH TOOLS & SEARCH STRATEGIES. From this topic , I know about internet is the search tools that we always using it. There are 5 types of search tools of internet which are Search Engines, Meta-Search Engines, Information Gate Ways, Subject Directories & Specialized Database. For your information, the specific name for AiU's OPAC is "CHAMO" but the special name is itAlic.

Search Strategies is the approach & structured or organization of term used to search a database or internet. It will indicate the terms in searching & help user to find an accurate result or specific information as well. There are 4 search strategies:

1) Search with Keyword:

  • using the synonym words.
  • example:  Tertiary Education = College = University.

2) Boolean Searching : there are 3 keywords between words.

  • AND

To limit the search.

  • OR
To expend the search.

  • NOT
To exclude the unwanted terms.

3) Truncation & Wildcard.
      Asterisk (*) & Question Mark (?) & Pound Sign (#)
  • Truncation : put at the of letters in the words.
Example:
teen* = teen or teens or teenage or teenager.

  • Wildcard : put in the middle of letters in the words.
Example :
                   wom?n = woman or women.

4) Phrase Searching :

  • searching for two or more words as an exact phrase.
  • use Brackets ( ) or Inverted Commas " " .
Example:
                  "Information Literacy" or (Information Literacy)

Topic 2 : Structure of Information & Reference Sources.

Assalamualaikum,

In topic 2, we have learnt about a structure of information which is to reflect on step 2 in Big 6. The 2nd step in Big 6 is Information Seeking Strategies. There are 2 format of information which are Printed (like as books, newspaper) & Non-Printed (such as internet, blogs). Besides that, there are 3 types of information that i did not know previously. Primary, Secondary, Tertiary.

Primary.

  • is an original document.
  • is a first hand information.
  • enable the researchers to get as close as possible.

Example:

DIARY

MANUSCRIPT

SPEECHES

SECONDARY.

  • something written about a primary source.
  • edit & review the sources.
  • interpretation of primary sources.
Example:
TEXTBOOKS

HISTORY BOOKS

ENCYCLOPEDIA

For your information, newspaper & magazines can be a PRIMARY or SECONDARY SOURCES. If the article was written at the time when something happened, it known as PRIMARY SOURCE.

TERTIARY.
  • distillation & collection of primary & secondary sources.
  • include most type of references.
Example:

DIRECTORIES

GUIDE TO LITERATURE

Topic 1 : Information Literacy & Big 6 Process.

Assalamualaikum,

Welcome to the last semester in FSP. In this semester I am taking Information Literacy (IL) as ICT subject. My lecturer for this subject is Miss NurKhairunnisha Zainal. What I have learnt in topic 1 are IL definition and Big 6 Process.

From what i have learnt, IL is the set of skill needed to find, retrieve, analyze & use information. IL also known as Information Competency & Information Skills. From my understanding, there are 6 elements of IL. That are Library Literacy, Media Literacy, Computer Literacy, Internet Literacy, Research Literacy & Critical Thinking Literacy. Information Literacy is very important because it is the solution to Data Smog.

The Big 6 Process

The Big 6 Process is a six stages of process to help anyone solve problems or make decisions by using the information.

  1. TASK DEFINITION : we have to define the problem and identify information needed. What type the information does we need ?
  2. INFORMATION SEEKING STRATEGIES : we have to determine the range of possible sources. Which are the best source that you want to put in your report.
  3. LOCATION AND ACCESS : We locate sources and find information within sources. Where ? and where information in each sources ?
  4. USE OF INFORMATION : engage such as read, hear, view or touch) that information.
  5. SYNTHESIS : We organize information from multiple sources and we present it.
  6. EVALUATION : At the end, we judge the product including judge the information problem to solve it. Is the task complete ? The objective is archive or not ?
